Your Stars 28 March 2010

Ever wondered why Easter’s date wanders around? Because it’s determined by the lunar calendar. Easter is celebrated at the first Sunday after the first full Moon after the Spring Equinox. It can therefore arrive anywhere between March 21st and April 25th.

Next weekend’s Easter follows tomorrow’s full Moon, at 2.25 am GMT. (This year, the Eastern Orthodox Church, which uses a different calendar, agrees.)

Its Christian meaning aside, Easter (allegedly named after a Germanic goddess, Eostre) retains elements of fertility rites that greet the resurrection of nature; cue hopping bunnies, flowers and eggs. Whatever your take on the spring holidays, enjoy them.

And if you haven’t sprung your clocks an hour forward to British Summer Time, you’re late!

Aries

Beavering away with speed and efficiency? This is an optimum time to be putting affairs in order and putting your face in front of those you wish to impress. You can carry on chest-thumping until the end of your birthday month, but this week Mercury and Venus hand you an edge. The sticky part of this planetary lollipop is the full Moon beaming in opposition from tomorrow afternoon through to noon Wednesday. Tip-toe gingerly around significant others and resist the temptation to vent your feelings without counting to one hundred. The more you can emulate the diplomacy of your partner sign, Libra, the better. On, and sharpen your wits for Thursday morning!

If you have been round the block with one particular romance this last five months, you are now approaching resolution maybe a complete blow-up! or at least hiatus. Single? Fine week to find a party.

You’re also close to a pivotal point in career matters. You may well be able to pull off a coup over the next two weeks, but don’t even think of playing dirty.

Taurus

Work and finding the energy to do it remain top of the agenda. The full Moon that dominates the early part of the week is there to remind you that you need all the infrastructure you can get for your chosen trade. It’s hard to operate in a void. Professionally speaking, these are new times, involving attitudes and people that will drag you, willy nilly, from your comfort zone. Go the extra mile.

The arrival of Venus, the Bull’s planet, on Wednesday evening raises the stakes in personal relationships, firing up tired romances and bringing you welcome attention, unsought provocation or overtures from afar. Three weeks to revel in your glory? That’ll do nicely.

Gemini

Hands full? The current particular planetary picture should suit Geminis just dandy, requiring you to juggle assorted issues while dashing around with a smile on your face. This year your career is a relentless, shape-shifting beast that must be constantly fed with energy and ideas. Currently, you are asked to make decisions about your fellow travellers, either to nurture or marginalise them. There are limits to how much benefit of the doubt can be extended.

Affairs of the heart are also stage centre, however briefly, as Saturn retrogrades out of your fifth house just when tomorrow’s new Moon arrives there. If the next few days don’t entail an intimate dialogue with you know who, then you’ll likely be giving yourself a good talking-to. Single Twins may like to duck the full Moon for the big one-on-one contretemps until the weekend that promises a less heated discussion.

Plus… the kids need to be pacified, travel plans have to be sorted and you might like a little secret grooming to takes place… all as soon as possible. Juggle on.

Cancer

Whether you have arrived at a professional breakthrough or are touching bottom, this is a tipping point career-wise. Take on board whatever lessons and information now arrive because even if the offers you need for long-term survival aren’t forthcoming, events are giving you a heads-up about all-important showdowns at your birthday month. Grab opportunities without undue soul-searching, especially where earning power is involved (not that you need telling but ‘get paid more’ is one of this spring’s mantras.)

Ingenuity remains the key to prosperity and public success, and that likely means not repeating yourself! 2010 is unlikely to resemble any year you have lived through (1981 being a possible exception) so your familiar act isn’t necessarily appropriate. Innovate! Pursuing the same theme, it’s a fine time to start/continue decrusting the Cancerian home.

Romance? Might as well sit on your hands until Thursday, when the full Moon has blown itself out and Venus is resolutely on your side.

Leo

Time to cut to the chase and declare your hand. You have (astonishingly) another two months with warrior Mars in your skies, but as there’s an enforced go-slow spell in the middle (18 April – 11 May), speed is now of the essence. Oil your wheels (maybe literally), get mobile, and decide who’s in or out of your personal club. Get ruthless and dump the timewasters.

The arrival of Venus at the peak of your ‘scope on Thursday opens a lengthy spell in the career spotlight; at this point cutting a dash is as important as heavy perspiration. Be warned: you are set-up for April Fool’s Day – joke or be joked upon. If you’re single, Easter weekend is perfect for a hot date…or, if you’re not, for all-purpose leonine splendour.

Virgo

It’s impolite to bang on about money, but as tomorrow’s full Moon conjuncts skinflint Saturn in your cash zone, your horoscope has no such reservations. Button down financial arrangements, and stop leaking funds to the unworthy (that’s almost everyone by the way). As Saturn’s back this way in a few months, this issue isn’t about to vanish. Act now or count losses later.

If you are managing to keep partnerships on a steady keel, thank your grounded good sense. Significant others are likely all too demanding, all too anxious to bust loose, or all too alluring to ignore. While many Virgos have been dragged through some pretty tortured relationship scenarios over the last couple of years, this spring sees a new level of challenge. How much of that good sense can afford to lose?

Libra

A full Moon in your skies – starting at noon tomorrow and completing at noon Wednesday – is definitely not guaranteed to provide you with the kind of sweet, cerebral and well-judged temperament with which your sign is (rather oddly) associated. Much more likely is that push reaches shove, you have to hop from your favoured position (on the fence) and that pushy partners, ex’s and possible dates have to be pacified.

Whether the issue is personal or political/professional, best make up your mind and let the world know about it; this is a favoured week for decisions (though after Wednesday is best for broadcasting them). Also for letting go of the grudges that have been part of Saturn’s tricky retrograde through your skies since new year. A few scales have surely dropped from your eyes since then, as you have recognised that people you like to count as fellow travellers are not actually on your side. No need to declare your hand, but a Libran rarely forgets or forgives a slight. Serve up your vengeance cold and well stewed in a few months time – not now.

Romance? Great time to be a in a trance or a tizz, but unless it’s a kismet moment, wait until after Wednesday. Before proposals.

Scorpio

A ghost from your past, or a secret that you have dragged round for the last five months, now comes up for a fresh reckoning or maybe (eek) an airing. Fearlessness, at which Scorpios excel, is the key when confronting whatever it is you’d rather not face. Lance the boil.

In other respects your ‘scope is in defiantly public mood, with everything to play for at work, despite any grisly politics that remain in process. You have to mix tactics according to course; tough and grudging, then expansive and innovative. You’re promised more support, privately or in public, once Venus arrives in your partnership zone on Wednesday evening – both then and on Thursday you have swaggering rights. Make the most of them.

Sagittarius

Allegiance to your favoured peer group, work crowd, or Masonic lodge has been the subject of several months of questioning by Saturn, requiring you to figure out whose club you would like to be in, or which members of your circle are actually (without getting paranoid) on your team? Tomorrow’s full Moon offers answers, however uncomfortable, to such questions – an inquisition that resumes in autumn. Meanwhile, stay as self-reliant as you can.

Something of the same dilemma might apply to your main squeeze or crush. Saggy love lives are in the process of re-invention, however, so stay philosophical until midsummer, or at least until mid-April. Easter weekend, with the Moon in the Centaur’s skies, gives you a great excuse to behave in that frank but entrancing manner the rest of us love so much. Flame on!

Capricorn

Career issues that have harried you from pillar to post over the last five months will be out of your hair in a week or so, but not before tomorrow’s full Moon has brought unresolved problems up for an all too public debate. The pursuit of power is a well-known Capricorn attribute; now is the time actually wield power or, if you’re still on your way up, to prove your mettle. Keep things impersonal; this is business.

Relationships closer to home are on the move. There isn’t time to mull things over endlessly; respond to that dance request, capture that contact number, push budding romances and lesser partnerships to new limits (can they actually deliver?). The soppy, doe-eyed stuff kicks in after Easter.

Aquarius

For a sign that is meant to be about inclusion, fair play and social justice, Aquarians can be remarkably awkward. While certain individuals have doubtless driven you to distraction in recent months, perhaps needling you for a reaction, you can’t just go off and sulk. Find a way to air grievances without making unnecessary enemies. Intermediaries help. Two months more of Mars in opposition will test your diplomatic skills! One particular fall-out, going back to October 2009, can now be straightened out, pride permitting.

Among those with whom you can make common cause, here’s a promising week or two, with Monday/Tuesday’s full Moon shining favourably on overseas contacts. The dizzy local round (and its media) look pretty rewarding too.

Pisces

Good faith and resolute self belief remain a central part to your professional mission or any other life-changing decisions you have taken/are contemplating. Under the planets dominant this spring, maintaining the status quo could prove a harder challenge than making a change. That doesn’t mean going for broke – in fact, with tomorrow’s full Moon in your ‘scope’s zone of resources, financial reality is an important anchor on more grandiose schemes.  Though Easter makes this a short week, plans are better pushed along this side of the holidays. Career matters may well play over the holidays in any case; the boundaries between public and private are blurred.

Romance? You’re the one that has to make the running. Shy and demure probably won’t work. Brash and bold, with offers of instant elopement (or lesser variation thereof) are more the ticket. Hitched? Is money an intrinsic part of long-term co-habitation? You bet. Especially now.

Hi Neil, so glad to see that you are now doing weekly postings. Sundays are not the same without your column, which I have always found to be eerily accurate. It is such a shame that the Observer are no longer publishing your column but best of luck with your new venture online.

    Best wishes

As an unemployed Aries, who has had a really weird time over the past year (unexpected pregnancy, flouncing out of job with no savings or job to go to etc) I am very heartened to read that things could be about to go better careerwise!
    Thanks!

As a Pisces I am a bit disappointed March brought all these massive big changes, for good and all that, but no emotional stability to actually enjoy them. And romance hasn’t quite delivered yet. I am also looking forward to the end of March and the beginning of a new month. Hopefully more leisure for Pisces?

Thanks again for your weekly horoscopes. They mean a lot to many of us. xx
